FAQs
PRINCE2® Foundation Certification: FAQs

PRINCE2 (Projects IN Controlled Environments) is a structured project management method based on experience drawn from thousands of projects - and from the contributions of countless project sponsors, Project Managers, project teams, academics, trainers and consultants.

PRINCE2 is a non-proprietary method and has emerged worldwide as one of the most widely accepted methods for managing projects. This is largely due to the fact that PRINCE2 is truly generic - it can be applied to any project regardless of project scale, type, organization, geography or culture.

PRINCE2 achieves this by isolating the management aspects of project work from the specialist contributions, such as design, construction etc. The specialist aspects of any type of project are easily integrated with the PRINCE2 method and, used alongside PRINCE2, provide a secure overall framework for the project work.

Because PRINCE2 is generic and based on proven principles, organizations adopting the method as a standard can substantially improve their organizational capability and maturity across multiple areas of business activity - business change, construction, IT, mergers and acquisitions, research, product development and so on.

The APM Group (APMG) is the Certification Body and is responsible for the running of examinations and accreditation of training organisations (ATOs), trainers, consulting organisations (ACOs) and consultants.http://www.prince-officialsite.com/faq.aspx?category=PRINCE2+FAQs&btnSubmit=Open#FAQno23

PMP – Project Management Professional is a certification based on the manual (PMBOK) Project Management Body of Knowledge. This certification tests specific knowledge areas important to a project manager. Whereas, PRINCE2 talks about establishing a structured approach on how to manage a project with focus on the processes and activities of the entire project team and responsibilities for each project team member.

PRINCE2 offers a process based approach to project management, defining a series of management processes, defining what must be done, when and how project must be completed and by whom over the life of a project. Whereas PMP/PMBOK can be described as a knowledge based approach to project management, describing core practices and a wider range of techniques that can be applied to manage a project. PRINCE2 and PMBOK are not competitive models; they do overlap in parts, though generally they are complementary models that can be applied together for different aspects of a project.

PRINCE2 is concerned with the framework in which to manage projects – a methodology. The PMP focuses on the skills and knowledge required by the Project Manager to manage the project through the lifecycle. You would actually benefit from having knowledge of both, providing a more rounded approach to project management. In an ideal world, all Project Managers would hold both qualifications, but students often choose one or the other.

Pass marks for the PRINCE2 examinations are as follows:

  • Foundation: You will need to score 35/70 to pass the Foundation exam.
  • Practitioner: You will need to score 59/108 to pass the Practitioner exam.
  • Re-Registration: You will need to score 20/36 to pass the Re-Registration exam.
